TOLKNINGSPROBLEMATIK

Alla vet att datorer kan hänga sig. Programexekveringen har hamnat i en loop. Detta kan inte lösas av algoritmerna inuti datorn utan bara genom yttre påverkan, t ex att vi stänger av datorn och sätter på den igen.

Det visar också att det inte är datoralgoritmerna som tolkar programmens styrning av processorn som bestämmer att de fysiska processer som pågår i datorn är informationshantering. Den tolkningen kommer utifrån, från oss. Datorn skulle gladeligen fortsätta exekvera loopen till dess den stoppades av datorns fysiska nedslitning eller att batteriet tog slut.

Datorer var en gång i tiden tänkta som en modell för matematikers tankar vid en beräkning. Naturligtvis visste alla att det bara var en idealisering av en liten del av allt som händer i en matematikers hjärna vid samma beräkning.

Filosofer har sedan dess ibland vänt uppochner på sambandet och använt datorn som en modell för allt det som pågår i hjärnan. Men en beräkning i hjärnan är mycket lätt påverkbar av förändringar i hjärnans struktur vare sig de är evolutionistiskt betingade eller härrör från individuell mognad, inlärning eller en hjärnskada, medan det motsatta inte är fallet. En förändring i beräkningen förändrar inte hjärnans struktur i kommande led.

Det är vi som sätter gränserna för vad som är informationshantering och vad som bara är en skräploop i en dator. Men vad sätter dom gränserna i våra hjärnor? Förkroppsligade algoritmer vare sig i kisel eller hjärnsubstans tolkar inte sig själva.

Det räcker inte att säga att det är evolutionen. Evolutionstryck sker bara mot en begränsad del av kroppens alla fysiska processer. De som är relevanta för överlevnad och reproduktion. Men vad avgör vilka processer som ska vara relevanta?

Som kognitionsforskaren/filosofen Daniel C. Dennett mycket riktigt påpekat är evolutionen en algoritm. Den står alltså inför samma tolkningsproblematik som algoritmerna i våra datorer även om den faktiskt kan förändra i hjärnstrukturen efter hand.

Filosofiska rum

Min primatar har alltid haft ett behov av att hitta filosofiska rum där han får vara ifred och tänka ostörd av omvärlden under idealt självvald lång tidsperiod.



När han var ung blev det oftast toaletter.



Senare i livet var det öar.



Ofta låtsades han sova.



Nu senast bland molnen. Där verkar det dock bli trångt. Över 2000 har hittat dit under första veckan..

All living things in this universe die. Among the plants, birds,
beasts and insects, some are born in the morning and die at eve, some have a life span of a year, and some last ten, or hundred, or a
thousand years. But they all die. The diference is merely one of
length of time.

The same is true of man. when he is living, he labors and occupies
himself with something and worries and plans as if he were going to
live forever. But when his spirit is dispersed and he dies, he cannot
even grow enough flesh to cover his white bones. Death comes to him exactly as it comes to the plants and the birds and the beasts and insects.

A gentelman is aware of this fact. He therefore does not regard life
and death as depending upon the existence or non existence of bodily
form, but rather upon the growth or decay of his spirit of life. When
a man is perfectly well in his body but his vital spirit is gone, he
may well be regarded as dead. If, however, one's life spirit is
developed to find expression in principles of the great stream of life
of this universe. He is then freed from this dependance on a material
body.

We find in the classics and history the ancient wise men who died long ago but whose light shines through the ages like the stars and the sun. I may truly say that these men are still living with us.

Therefore, whether man is mortal or immortal depends entirely upon the man himself. However, all men die and few there are indeed who have become immortal. A scholar should make up his mind and rely on himself.

Film Notes: Alice in this film represents us all. Her journey is ours. And like all of us, she struggles with knowing who she is, why she exists, and what is the purpose of life with all of its struggles, its sufferings and joyful experiences.

"One may have a idea of where they are going, but where you are is much more important."

Very zen like, this quote seems to say we can let go of the struggle to try to go somewhere and instead just be, in the here and now without worrying about going somewhere.

Alice is spinning upside down signifying her confusion and duality of being of course in the present moment, while at the same time, lost in thoughts goals of wanting to go somewhere.

Alice falls, representing those moments during the day when thought is quiet, and yet when she lands, she checks her feet.... "roof brain chatter" or the stream of thoughts in our minds does not stay quiet for long! After the peace of just being while falling, thought kicks in as soon as she lands.

"The goal must be to not move towards a concept or mental image,
but to fully see what is, in this moment.
For only here and now is real."

Alice lost in thought once again while rolling around the floor, is then shown flying at a sunrise, spinning free. Next standing in a serene field of flowers representing those moments of bliss or total peace we've all had and wish to return to if we only knew how.

"Your thoughts are like a river
moving though your mind,
like clouds blowing across the sky."

The man here represents the body of Alice, standing relatively still, and Alice herself represents her thoughts. Agitated, totally out of control, no real direction... that's the mind at times! While the quote points to a zen like state where you watch your thoughts from a distance, Alice clearly shows the more common experience of a person with thought totally out of control!

Next we see Alice is a state of meditation or quiet self awareness. She is seeking a freedom from her agitated mind. She remembers a moment of peace and contentment in the arms of a former lover. Naked against the backdrop of the city, showing her sincerity, vulnerability, and innocence in the questions she is asking herself.

"If you think you're free, there's no escape possible."

There is no way to find a higher peace unless you desire and believe in something more than you have.

"Consciousness and thought are not the same thing, though our thoughts convince us they are."

A lot of times we try to use only thought to look for freedom and peace and yet it's often thought that's the problem to start with. We often torture ourselves with our thoughts of quilt, regret etc.

Everyone is body and soul, higher and lower natures, and like everyone Alice has a dual nature. We see her walking in a sexy bikini full of ego and body identification, and then drunk spinning in a bar, then falling down. Then, while in a run down part of town, she is shown having higher thoughts. No matter where we find ourselves or how dire our situations, we can take a higher path in our minds.

"When looking at the self, there's not more to do, only more to see and to understand."

We see Alice meditating in a Buddhist temple, then staring at negative worldly posters in a bar, then looking at art in a small gallery. Again showing the duality of a normal person. The art can represent various things to each of us such as the realization of death in Sidney Nolan's, Perished but I found the two photographs shown together striking. The pictures of a new born baby and a homeless man laying on a sidewalk. That man too was once a newborn full of promise and one wonders what could have led him to that state.

"To make great changes in ourselves, takes a great understanding of ourselves."

Alice then goes through a looking glass and remembers a past life in the late 1700's with her soul mate. While reincarnation is a personal belief, this sequence also shows how others in our lives are very important. We need others and love to thrive and be happy.

Alice died young in this life, leaving her lover lost and broken. But then we see her at peace swinging on a swing. All things are temporary in life, even suffering and pain can't last forever.

"The more you are aware of, the freer you will be."

Mitt hem på molnet Pleasant Path

Som så många andra har jag kvalificerat mig för ett gratishem i Cloud Party.



Stället heter Lennart´s Home rätt och slätt på molnet Pleasant Path.



Hatten är som en doktorshatt som man får om man klarar att att göra nybörjarinstruktionen steg för steg som inte tar några sju år, knappt sju minuter.

Rose is not like Apmel defined by Donald Duck

When Rowan Derryth moved her interview with Rose from the hopelessly laggy SLB9 to her own sim Two Fish a lot of her friends showed up even though the change came late and Apmel never rezzed but stayed a white cloud throughout and his planned filming of the event had to be cancelled, but look out for a pod cast from Rowan.



There you will hear the whole fascinating story about Rose´s family and get a lot of background for the appreciation of her art. Now of course Apmel rather not interpret anything in religious terms, but Rose took the time to explain to him that although an atheist like Apmel she thought it was important to tell the stories from the bible since they define who we are.



Everyone seemed to agree and this was not an interview with Apmel so he didn´t think it was time then, but now here on the blog, to say that he personally is more defined by Donald Duck and Disney myths.

IRL I forced my father to read the Donald Duck comic books over and over until I knew them by heart and in turn "read" them to my friends before any of us knew how to read proper.

Enough about me :) Not much to say about SaveMe either, who only peed once during the whole interview. And Kandi had a problem with the sound and fell asleep.

We try again this evening at 3.pmslt. at SL9; because the first time around I stumbled of my words and made no sense, Rowan pushed all the wrong buttons, Ampel thought is was boring and left half way, my friends did not show up because they thought it was boring by forehand and Saveme was not around to take it up to an higher level.



When Apmel was there the first time around he his was camming around and found this example of Roses artwork behind the stage, not that he was bored or anything :)

Rose makes it sound like there was hardly anyone there, but people kept dropping in the hour or so Apmel was there. He was just about to say hello to Jayjay (dropping in on his way to Barcelona?) when he crashed inrepairably, something that has happened to him every time he goes to the SLB sims this year :(

This is the revisedversion of one i just did, subtle differences...It is number 17 in a series of videos I have made on a journey of self discovery. Life and Wisdom are a journey.. each of us follow... the conscious realization that the JOURNEY is the essence of life and wisdom is the beginning of true self-knowledge, and peace in your heart. Tidig midsommarafton med Philip

Midsommaraftonen började i in world redan 01.00 för Kluddens och 70 andra avatarers del i Burn2 med en frågestund med ingen mindre än Second Lifes grundare Philip Rosedale som gjorde ett av sina numera sällsynta inhopp med sin avatar Philip Linden.



Philip fick bara snälla frågor och mycket beröm för såväl sitt nya avatarutseende som för att ha skapat en virtuell värld som betytt så mycket för så många under sina första nio år.



Philip berättade bland annat att han under sitt första besök på Burning Man IRL fått idén till en virtuell värld som skulle kunna se ut ungefär som de byggen som reses där mitt ute i öknen varje år. Och att det dessutom skulle vara lika lätt att ta kontakt och samarbeta med andra som han upplevde att det var där till skillnad från vardagslivet där man för det mesta bara umgås otvunget med människor man redan känner.

På frågan om han tyckte att det blivit som han ville svarade Philip att i det stora hela har Second Life blivit som han drömde om, men att man var tidigt ute och tekniken inte riktigt fanns där då. Hade man startat idag skulle SL vara "moln"-baserat utan egna servrar t ex. En utveckling han gärna velat för avatarlivet var att man kunde skapat ögonkontakt!

En sådan hör ännu bara primatarlivet till, liksom midsommaraftonsfirandet med kärlek, matjesillstårta och ekologisk snaps som vidtog efter ett par timmars sömn :)

Rose Borchovsky's multi-faceted and heart-rending exhibit in Second Life: a mother, Beth, and her young daughter, Lot, have become separated during the war. Beth's bereavement has no closure. "The Inevitability of Fate" is a title with a double meaning, as "lot" in Dutch means "fate." What Lot's inevitability is remains unknown, and I hope to have kept it so, even if I have given her a voice in this film. With the Second Life 9th Birthday upon us, we with Burn2 want to take a moment to explain why Second Life would not be what it is without us. The key lies with Second Life's founder and first (and third) CEO, Philip Rosedale, the first life incarnation of Philip Linden.

Way back in 2009, on Second Life's own blog, Phil said the following:

"It has been said that I was inspired to build Second Life when I first went to Burning Man in 1999 (the year I founded Linden Lab), but that isn't quite true. I had been thinking about building Second Life since I was in high school. When I got to Burning Man, I had long been obsessed with the idea of what a fascinating thing it would be to use computers to simulate reality - to basically build the worlds biggest Lego kit - one that would let you build a whole universe out of digital 'atoms'. But I hadn't really thought much about what the community and social experience of being in such a digital world would be, or what sort of things people would build and for what reasons. So when I pulled up in the middle of the night and passed through the gates into the city, I was blown away by the sudden realization that probably the world of Second Life would look and feel a lot like Burning Man."

While Second Life may have been gestating in Philip's head a lot longer than his arrival on the playa, it's clear that the social framework that makes up Second Life, and the world we conceive of at Burning Man, are linked.

What's more: if Second Life's community mirrors that of Burning Man, than surely the community that springs forth of the pixelated playa of Burn2 is one step further in: A community ir burners conceived within the Second Life community, conceived within the Burning Man community that forms each year in the Black Rock Desert.

VAR SITTER TOLKEN?

Jag är en hårdnackad materialist och som sådan har jag hittills alltid sloganmässigt sagt att liv ”bara är kemi” och att ett medvetet jag med en egen agenda (ett subjekt) bara är en ”computation” (något en finurligt programmerad dator skulle kunna ha).

Den vanliga svenska översättningen av ”computation” är visserligen det fantasilösa ordet beräkning, men den engelska synonymen ”figuring” har också betydelsen ”att tänka”. Att tillverka en maskin som kunde tänka är bara, har jag tänkt, en fråga om tid och bättre programmering, kanske med hjälp av evolutionslika algoritmer i en självnavigerande robot.

Men det här sättet att tänka, som jag delar med många, som döljer det som man tror bara är detaljer i en eller flera ”svarta lådor” som kan öppnas vad det lider, riskerar att visa sig vara en rad av kinesiska askar där man aldrig blottlägger det som man egentligen behöver förklara.

Rent bokstavligt är allt tal om ändamålsenlighet (att agera utifrån ett mål) logiskt osammanhängande för en materialist. Det materiella tillståndet i en framtid kan inte sätta gränser för materiella processer i nuet. En materiell modell av en möjlig framtid kan visserligen göra det, men vad bestämmer att modellen är en karta för framtiden?

En modell är en abstraktion. Den bygger lika lite som dagens virtuella datorvärldar upp en verklighet som är lika detaljrik som det den vill vara en modell av. Det gäller inte bara algoritmer i datorer utan även de beskrivningar vi använder oss av till vardags, vårt språk.

Om man tror att språket inte kräver en tolk har man förväxlat kartan med verkligheten. Det som bestämmer hur modeller ska tolkas vare sig de är mjukvara till datorer eller medfödd grammatik och inlärt språk finns inte inuti askarna med alltmer detaljerade modeller, utan måste komma utifrån.

Efter att Alan Turing och Alonzo Church för ett halvt århundrade sedan visat att vilken godtycklig fysisk process som helst kan tolkas som en ”computation” - och därför likställas med informationshantering - har en del kosmologiskt och filosofiskt intresserade vetenskapsmän hamnat i en modern variant av den filosofiska panpsychismen där den amerikanske fysikern Seth Lloyd kanske uttryckt det klarast med ”here is where life shows up. Because the universe is already computing from the very beginning when it starts..”

Men för att fysiska processer ska vara informationshantering måste de handla om någonting annars är de bara omedvetna händelser.

TOLKAREN går inte att hitta längst ut i universums början heller.

En nästan perfekt kväll

Det var fullt när Ocho Club Tango öppnade igår. Man fick passa på när någon lämnade för att komma in. Med gemensamma ansträngningar lyckades Apmel och ush ändå träffas i baren.



Vi hade en hel del att prata om och vilket bättre sätt finns än att dansa tango medan man immar..



Joaquin Gustaf spelade härlig gitarr men vi hängde kvar en bra stund efter att han slutat och det blev en nästan perfekt kväll.
