Portraits of Women
Art and the African woman
Dear African Live Co-owner,
For several months I wanted to get more involved in group life at Africa Live. Bafana Beaumont asked me to do an exhibition in connection with the Decade for Women decided by the African Union. My husband, a painter in his spare time, painted several African portraits Together we ran two galleries in Second Life (The Garden of Artists Without L$ and Pixel Arts). I decided to dedicate the exhibition to "the place of women in African art".
After weeks of searching the net, having very little knowledge on the subject, I find it very rich and vast. Indeed, African women have inspired many painters and sculptors; particularly Western artists in the 19th and 20th centuries. For example, Picasso was inspired by photographs of African women for his famous "Demoiselles d'Avignon".
This exhibition will be scalable. Due to prim limits, limited space of the gallery, and lack of funds I have not been able to exhibit traditional African art, promote contemporary African artists, or perform research on the African woman.
In the spirit of sharing and participation, which leads the group Africa Live, it seems important to exhibit the real work of the group in relation to the theme of the exhibition. I'm sure there are many photographers and painters among the 900 plus members.
All suggestions are welcome.
Enjoy your visit!

P.P.S. All monies received from the sale of my husband's paintings will go to Africa Live.
