Tolerance for Ambiguity (Use ID 100000)
Reality is big and complicated ;-) One of our specie's best tricks is to break reality down into constituent parts, which simplifies it, and allows it to be more effectively and efficiently managed.
So of all the many plants in the world, human beings were able to categorize them and specify which ones were nutrition and which were poisonous, for example. Our ability to make such determinations with accuracy and assurance was, of course quite strongly related to our survival.
Basically, knowing "what's up" means that we know what is useful and not useful, what is dangerous or not dangerous, and we like to be able to keep these categories separated as we move through life.
HOWEVER, YOU CAN HAVE TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING!!
So, in the extraordinary complexities of civilized life, and where almost nothing is really dangerous, and where things are changing all the time, we are more often than not wanting to categorize things in too simple a way, or too consistent a way , or generally in a way which is not adaptive to the many changing circumstances that we encounter.
In the early 1960's research began to be done on a the personality trait of "Tolerance for Ambiguity" . And, indeed, it seems that as people we definitely differ on this trait. Some of us are "black and white" thinkers who believe strongly that things should be "either this or that, and not both". Other's of us believe strongly that life is a thousand shades of gray.
In truly life and death situations, black and white decisions do need to be made. The battlefield adage is "he who hesitates is lost". And when the Tiger comes around the corner, you can either fight or run, but if you stand there thinking you are going to get eaten for sure!!!
But modern life is decidedly short on Tigers. So in civilization, research has found that tolerance for ambiguity is related to creativity, adaptability, psychological mindedness, and a variety of other generally useful qualities.
So where do you stand on Tolerance for Ambiguity? To take a test to find out go to http://facultyfp.salisbury.edu/fmshipper/MGMT625/intolerance_for_ambiguity.asp
and use the ID 100000 which seems to work just fine:))
