Reflection Freenote: Life in the metaverse, being a “simulation” of our material manifestations of being, is necessarily simplified according to what we consider to be the most essential vectors of existence.
So we have an identity as a causal agent in our avatar, and we relate with other causal agents in meaningful relationship in a “world” which has geographical space and symbolic/artistic representations of important cultural meaning.
We relate to each other in language, and for many of us this is more abstracted and simplified, in that we conduct our discourse in text chat.
This textural chat is a distillation of organic verbal communication to its most essential concepts of meaning and emotion, leaving aside all the complex organic information about us (age, sex, ethnicity, immediate emotion) which voice carries.
All of this distillation of complexity of organic/material existence to its most essential conceptual vectors, allows us to explore ourselves and our processes of living more rapidly and efficiently.
Just as a blue print is a simplified and symbolic representation of the material reality which a building is and can become, SL is a conceptual representation of material reality which allows us to explore reconfiguration freely.
It is easier to draw a new design than to build a different building, after all.
It takes the bonfire of organic life and pares it down to a laser beam of coherent light which can be used for very specific illuminations.
The Epic poem of our life, which recapitulates the grandeur and complexity of the progression of our whole species, is pared down to a pithy Haiku which defines a specific essence which is important in our individual progressions at the moment.
There are two broadly different approaches to the conduct of human relationship which are represented in the processes of avatars.
One is based upon the premise that finding authenticity and an accurate understanding of reality is at the core of all healthy advance and progression in living.
Another is based upon the premise that finding the outcomes that I desire, regardless of authenticity and accuracy is all that is really important in the living of life.
Consequently, we find those in SL who relate to us honestly with regard to who they are as people, and we can very rapidly build enormous and powerful intimacies based on such knowledge.
On the other hand we find those in SL who relate to us in an essentially manipulative way, and who will distort the essence of their reality in order to control us emotionally for their own immediate purposes.
In either case, SL is a powerful tool and increases the ease of which these ends can be pursued.
That is, if I am seeking an authentic perspective upon reality with another person, this will be facilitated in many different ways.
Likewise, if I am seeking to manipulate others, I am equally facilitated in that quest.
And it should be noted that none of this has to do with whether or not one is being “objectively” accurate about things in First Life.
The novel “Hawaii” by Mitchener is likely to be the most accurate and authentic exploration of the nature and culture of the Hawaiian Islands, but it is fiction.
The statistical reports which government agencies offer to justify their existence and actions, while factual, are often gross distortions of reality.
So the question of authenticity of personal essence in a human being and in a human relationship remains a challenging matter of exploration, judgment and definition.
And this is more of a challenge, and more of an opportunity in SL than it is in FL.
So what have you found?
Have you been mislead by others in SL?
Have you been deeply enlightened by others in SL?
Can you cheat an honest man? And what does that truism really mean?
Perhaps it means that you can trust reality to always be right there for you to discern, and that if we disregard this essential challenge of authenticity for some short term benefit, then we will be further educated by a caring and nurturing cosmos.
And with that I turn the discussion of authenticity in SL over to you.
